shusu:It affects you if what is acceptable is determined not by the community you're in, but by 6A staff. Yes, that's right. Artistic merit will not be decided by you. You are, ultimately, not in control of what can and cannot be published. You will not be given notice if you've run afoul of the system. Your work could be acceptable for an art museum, but not here. Are you okay with that?
and
They don't round up everyone on the block and march them off, guys. They pick one or two or three because someone above them said, look what we'll do to you. They do a purge while everyone's at a convention? Those are the same tactics available in real life.coffeeandink:I've seen several people say this is not the ditch they'll die defending, but the defense of the principle of free exchange of ideas often involves defending ideas that any reasonable person would find offensive and extreme. The defense of ideas we agree with isn't much of a test of our principles. This is not a case of government suppression and I am not arguing that it is; again, I agree that the LJ policy is legal. I just don't agree that it is a good idea.
elke_tanzer:I am angry about how LJ/6A is handling these issues. I recognize that the legal situation is rather fuxxored in many ways, too(read comments below and the posts linked above, please), but the fact that LJ has been repeatedly asked to clarify their policies and procedures and we've just gotten Great Big Silence is what's convinced me that we need to have serious contingency plans, because as soon as the "report abuse" button is available on every single page of LJ, how many of us do you think are going to vanish from here without warning?
