Current mood:bleh.

w00t and meh.
I have internets again! Contact with the world may resume. Will catch up on comments when I get back from work.

In other news, LJ's latest update is... nrg. I feel like we've been jerked around a lot recently. I think this policy clarification is a step in the right direction, but it's kind of too little, too late. If they'd posted this from the beginning, I think things would have gone down very differently. Still, this:

* How do these policies apply to images of minors who are not real?

To ensure that we are compliant with child pornography laws, we have decided to treat any content which contains a graphic visual depiction of a minor (anyone under the age of 18, as defined by Federal and California state law) engaged in sexually explicit conduct as a violation of our policy regarding illegal content (see this linkfor definitions of graphic, visual depiction, and sexually explicit conduct). We feel this approach creates the clearest guidelines possible for users to follow and for the Abuse Prevention Team to enforce, and minimizes the risk of an incorrect evaluation of material. In short, we want to eliminate child porn from being hosted on LiveJournal.
makes me unhappy. I mean, one- drawings are not child porn, though I can understand not wanting them here.

I don't know... I'm kind of concerned. I think fandom tends to be more concerned about writers than artists, and even people who are okay with text about minors might not be with visual depictions. Which means that *I* kind of feel I have to leave, but the rest of fandom... might not. I mean, honestly, I'd probably be fine, because nothing I've drawn- with people of any age- could be called pornographic. But I don't know that I trust LJ's word on... anything, honestly. Meh. Right now the whole thing is stressing me out and making me feel a little sick to my stomach. I think I'm going to sit back and focus on my IBARW posts and see how this plays out. (...probably a bad sign when talking about racism is the more calming of two options.)

This isn't much comfort, but artists are just as much a part of my fandom as writers and readers.

It's comfort to me. Thanks. :)

So long as they're dancing to the WfI's tune, I don't really feel safe, at all. I mean, they're going after the *fan artists*. That's not even remotely cool, and it's really pretty fucking close to the writers, when you get right down to it. Or... flail. *hugs you*

Oh, man, I don't trust 'em any farther than I can throw 'em. I wouldn't feel safe even if I didn't draw, but I can see other parts of fandom saying 'well, they're saying text is almost always okay, so...'
flail, indeed. *flails*

You are not alone in this, and one needn't be a fanartist to see either the many merits of your work or the issues LJ raises in policing it.

Thanks- I hope enough other people see it that way as well.

I would've felt a lot better about LJ if they'd made that post a month ago. I'm glad that they've been more clear about their policies, but their clarification amounts to "No, we don't want you."

I wouldn't be too concerned. A great deal of fans really like at least one fanartist who could be affected, or have no trust in LJ anymore, and if they/we all leave.... We'll linger, but I really do think that LJ's on its way out as [LJ-based] fandom's main body, and the next year will only solidify that.
